The Generation Teamplate Theory of Dr. Alexa Abrenica
The Generation Teamplate Theory of Dr. Alexa Abrenica
Every Psychology student would definitely come across with the
Generation Theory of Dr. Alexa Abrenica which is the first career theory by a Filipino.
I was assigned to report this theory when I was on my 4th year in
college. It took a lot of time before I could find good sources and so I
decided to share to my blog after my report. I made the first draft more than
two years ago and just today, April 19, 2018, when I was scanning my files, I
found the unfinished write-up and decided to publish it. Well, to all the
Psychology students out there, I hope this would lessen your burden and could
help you a bit 😊
The Proponent
AlexaP. Abrenica is a part-time
Psychology professor at De La Salle University. She obtained her degree in
Psychology at the Universityof Santo Tomas, her degrees in Master of Science in
Guidance and Counseling and Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology at De
La Salle University.
The Tenets
When one joins the work force he/she spends most of
his/her waking hours on the job. It is thus very important that one is able to
choose what is related to his/her abilities, competencies, interest and
personality so that one can meet the demands of the job, thereby, be more or
less assured of a satisfying work life.
Socialization, positive experience and availability
of successful models in one’s family are important ingredients in choosing a
career.
Socialization is important in introducing the child
to the ways of living one’s culture.
Parents are the first agents of socialization.
The Cultural Stamp continues to influence behavior.
The career of the parents or other significant individuals are well observed at close range.
Positive experiences with the imitation imprint the schemata further and lead the way to choosing similar career options.
The presence of successful models and positive experiences enable an individual to do self-evaluation and increase one’s self-confidence.
These cognitive processes lead to the inclusion of similar career options.
- Circuitous career pathing can be explained by lack of Career Guidance.
- Assess client’s abilities and competencies
- Collect information about the client’s personality
- Surface information about immediate family environments in broadening career choices
- Provide information about career requirements and opportunities
- Integrate the data so that choices can be narrowed down
Dr Alexa Abrenica was my PhD guide at De La Salle University (2003). At that time she was working on Midlife Transition. Glad to see her contribution to the filed of psychology.
